The evening of November 23, 2024, was a vibrant tapestry of color, rhythm, and jubilation as the Botswana Music Union (BOMU) Awards illuminated the GICC in Gaborone. Under the theme “Music Beyond,” the 2024 BOMU Awards unfolded with grandeur, etching unforgettable memories in the rich annals of Botswana’s thriving music history. A large audience gathered to celebrate the nation’s finest musical talents in a ceremony that not only highlighted artistic brilliance but also underscored the event’s growing prestige.
Among the night’s biggest winners were the acclaimed international DJs, Harrycane and DJ Ngwazi. For the second consecutive year, DJ Ngwazi emerged victorious at the BOMU music awards.
Amidst an atmosphere of anticipation, DJ Ngwazi ascended the stage to accept his first accolade of the night: Best Single for his hit song, “Fake Love.” This song, a collaboration with Dr. Tawanda and his 24-year-old daughter Nelcy B, has captivated audiences on social media and radio. Nelcy B, a prodigy who began her vocal career at nine, has contributed to her father’s songs like “Aripo Here,” “Ndaramba,” “Give Me Power,” and “Ndakamuwana.”
Shortly after, DJ Ngwazi returned to the stage to claim his second award, Best Amapiano Album, again for “Fake Love.” Later, the song clinched the prestigious Song of the Year award.
Meanwhile, Harrycane triumphed with the Best Music Video for “Dubula Remake,” featuring Master KG, DJ La Timmy, and Eemoh. Initially discovered by Master KG, Harrycane has flourished under his mentorship. Their original collaboration garnered sixteen million views on YouTube, marking it as a significant success. Harrycane also won Best Remix for “Dubula Remix” and Best Producer, a title previously dominated by Fella on the Beat. Born in Francistown, Harrycane embarked on his musical journey at 16, driven by an unwavering passion for creating beats. He continuously pursues collaborations across various genres, inspired by South African DJ Maphorisa’s collaborative ethos.
Noteworthy among the night’s achievements were Han C and Priscilla K, who won Best Afro Pop. Over recent years, the “Pepetetsa” hitmaker has consistently secured award nominations, though his haul has diminished in the last three years. Although Han C usually wins multiple awards, he garnered only one this time but received four nominations at the Yarona FM Music Awards (YAMAs).
The awards night also celebrated the contributions of various artists who have enriched the music industry. Chokoma’s victory in the Best Male category exemplified his impressive musical journey from Kgalagadi to the international stage. Additionally, DJ Kap, Ancestral Rituals, and Thato Tladi received well-deserved recognition for their outstanding projects. These young talents, often overlooked, finally reaped the rewards of their dedication.
Kearoma Rantao’s remarkable comeback saw her dominate the BOMU Music Awards, claiming Best Jazz Album and Best Female, surpassing peers like Bouncy, Boago Fengu, and Katlego Ramphaleng. Although Bouncy did not win either of her nominations, her presence was notable.
Motswafere, Veezo View, and Kabelo Tiro also emerged victorious, winning Best Pop Album, Best Hip Hop Album, and Best Album of the Year, respectively.
The late Gomolemo “Sir G” Motswaledi was honored posthumously with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the BOMU Music Awards’ most prestigious accolade. During his lifetime, Sir G played a pivotal role in nurturing today’s music stars, such as Lizibo, Nnunu Ramogotsi, and Punah Gabasiane. This award commemorates legendary figures whose significant contributions have propelled Botswana’s music industry forward over two decades. Sir G’s passion for the arts led to the creation of the award-winning KTM Choir. He passed away in 2014, leaving an enduring legacy.
The 2024 BOMU Awards transcended a mere awards ceremony; they were a celebration of Botswana’s cultural identity and artistic talent. The event was a testament to music’s power to unite, inspire, and transcend boundaries. As the night drew to a close, it was evident that the BOMU Awards had once again spotlighted Botswana’s incredible talent.
Looking forward, the BOMU Awards remain a beacon of excellence in the music industry, setting a stage for future artists to follow in this year’s winners’ footsteps. As echoes of the night’s performances lingered, anticipation for the future was palpable. With each passing year, the awards grow in stature and influence, cementing their place as a cornerstone of Botswana’s cultural landscape.
The 2024 BOMU Awards were an undeniable success, a night of music, joy, and celebration that will be cherished for years to come. As the final notes played and the curtains fell, the spirit of Botswana’s music scene had been celebrated in all its splendor, leaving an indelible mark on all who witnessed it.
