When football meets charity, the impact goes far beyond goals and trophies. In Jwaneng, the GM Soccer Fiesta has transformed lives; renovating school hostels, building a new clinic, creating opportunities for women in sport, and pumping millions of pula into community development.
As the tournament gears up for its fifth edition from July 31 to August 2, organisers say it’s no longer just a pre-season warm-up. Since launching in 2022, the event has grown into one of Botswana’s best examples of sport driving social and economic change. Bigger crowds, stronger teams, and more corporate backing have fueled this growth, with every single surplus pula invested back into projects benefiting Jwaneng and Tlhankane communities.
Njabulo Gilika, vice chairperson of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), says the vision has always reached beyond football. “What started as a simple tournament has become a powerful platform for community development,” he explains ahead of this year’s event. Each edition focuses on a project addressing urgent local needs. The first tournament laid the groundwork for what organisers hoped would become a sustainable fundraiser for grassroots growth.
By 2023, the vision was taking shape. The second tournament raised P225,000, which helped launch the Jwaneng Galaxy women’s team; za key step in boosting female participation in football. “Supporting the girl child through the women’s team felt like the right move,” Gilika says. The momentum built even more in 2024. With Zimbabwean giants Highlanders joining the lineup, the event drew around 4,000 fans and raised P750,000.
Instead of pouring the money back into football, the funds went to refurbishing hostels at Mogale Junior Secondary School, improving living conditions for over 200 students. Last year’s tournament marked another leap forward. Attendance doubled to about 8,000 spectators, and fundraising hit P1.4 million, reflecting the event’s soaring popularity.
That money paid for a fully equipped clinic in Betesankwe, officially opened on July 17, bringing much-needed healthcare to the local community. “This shows continuous growth,” Gilika says. “It means we can make an even bigger impact.”
This year’s edition promises another thrilling football showdown. The men’s competition will feature Gaborone United, Mochudi Centre Chiefs, hosts Jwaneng Galaxy, and Namibian champions African Stars; keeping with the tradition of inviting at least one regional club to widen the tournament’s appeal. Beyond entertaining fans, it offers clubs valuable pre-season practice, especially for Gaborone United and Jwaneng Galaxy as they prepare for continental CAF competitions.
Gilika believes regional participation has boosted the tournament’s profile and exposed local teams to diverse playing styles ahead of the domestic season. But despite its success, financial sustainability remains a challenge. As preparations near the finish line, Gilika is calling for more corporate partners to join the cause. “We’re making a heartfelt plea,” he says.
One of the tournament’s longest-standing supporters, Barloworld Equipment, has renewed its financial backing despite tough trading conditions. Derrick Musa, speaking for the company, says Barloworld Equipment remains committed to initiatives that leave lasting community impact. With a presence in Botswana for over 60 years and a partnership with Debswana since its inception, the company has contributed around P400,000 for this year’s event.
Musa acknowledges this sponsorship is less than last year’s P1 million due to the current economic climate. “Even with the challenges, we’ve managed about P400,000. Last year, we gave around P1 million, but we asked Debswana to reduce our contribution because the trading environment isn’t favorable,” he explains.
