Hang these 3 men – Court of Appeal rules

The Court of Appeal has delivered a landmark ruling, upholding the death sentences for three inmates – Ernest Legwale, Thato Tsametse, and Elijah William – ordering them to hang until death. Meanwhile, in a contrasting twist, the appeal of Rivers Kekana, another death row inmate, was successful, granting him reprieve from the hangman’s noose.

Ernest Legwale’s case is steeped in a grim narrative of mistaken identity and dark beliefs in witchcraft. Convicted for the murder of Thato Meswele in 2015, Legwale had hired hitmen to kill his ex-wife, but the hitmen tragically killed the wrong person. The High Court initially spared him the death penalty, citing extenuating circumstances linked to his belief in witchcraft, which the court regarded as a mitigating factor. Yet, the Court of Appeal’s recent ruling has overturned this leniency, affirming that the gravity of the crime demands the ultimate punishment. This ruling underscores the court’s unwillingness to allow cultural beliefs to overshadow the rule of law when a life has been taken.
