As the sun rose over Gaborone, Botswana’s capital, a new dawn seemed to break for the nation. The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), a coalition of opposition parties, had just achieved a historic victory, ending the Botswana Democratic Party’s (BDP) uninterrupted rule since independence in 1966.
