The greater Khama family often tops the collective mind whenever political dynasties come up in conversation. Whether judged by size or influence, the Khamas have built an unmatched familiarity with Botswana’s corridors of power that will take a long time to rival.

They certainly hold a unique place in Botswana’s history, but in a creeping number of ways, the Khamas have now met their match and been outdone by a lesser-known dynasty in a political dance that peaked in 2010 and has since turned into a complex puzzle.

Though this other family is a centuries-old multigenerational dynasty, it has been missing one key accomplishment: the democratic control of Botswana’s executive, judiciary, and legislative powers.
