Ookeditse: My politics aren’t tied to BPF

Botswana’s political landscape is heating up as the country approaches the 2029 general elections, and amid this charged atmosphere, Lawrence Ookeditse, the embattled leader of the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF), has made a defiant declaration that his political survival does not hinge on his party.

This announcement challenges the growing speculation that internal party dynamics threaten to unseat him from the presidency and weaken his position for the upcoming electoral showdown.

Ookeditse’s statement pierces through the usual political noise. “If I have to join BCP because it has numbers, I will do so. Even if I have to join BDP because it still has most numbers (popular vote), I can do so. Even if I have to join UDC and represent Nata-Gweta, I can do so. But I know my people, and they know me, and they will still vote for me,” he boldly asserted. This kind of political flexibility is rare in Botswana’s traditionally stable party environment, where allegiance has typically defined political identity and success.
