Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) has donated an HP laptop, HP desktop computer and twelve (12) months of internet connectivity worth P20,778.00 to the Rehabilitation Centre for Ex Offenders in Thamaga village. Rehabilitation Centre for Ex Offenders is a non-government organisation founded by reformed ex-offenders to provide services and support to inspire active criminals to be law abiding as well as the re-integration of ex-convicts through provision of rehabilitation and crime prevention solutions.
Welcoming guests to the main Kgotla, Kgosi Bone Gobuamang stated that she was happy when she heard that BTC Foundation has come onboard to assist the course to support and rehabilitate ex-offenders. She thanked the Chairperson and founder of the Centre, Mr Seabe Ramoruswana for starting such an initiative. For his part, Mr Ramoruswana stated that the centre was established to rehabilitate and reintegrate ex-offenders back into society. He further highlighted the need for more funding as ex-offenders and troubled children, especially boys, need a lot of support as they are limited by lack of funds and encouragement from their community. He encouraged parents to be more encouraging to their children and ensure proper guidance so that children do not fall into the criminal lifestyle.
Handing over the donation to the Rehabilitation Centre for Ex Offenders in Thamaga, BTC Head of HR Services Mr Teko Monko stated that these donations will enable individuals at the centre to pursue online courses, build their digital literacy, search for job opportunities, and engage in self-development programmes. ‘All these are critical steps in re-adapting into society with dignity and confidence’, he stated. Mr Monko stated that, “the internet connectivity for the next 12 months will ensure that access to the internet is not limited, especially for educational purposes, staying in touch with loved ones, or even exploring the vast resources available online for personal growth and career advancement” concluded Mr Monko.
Additionally, the BTC Foundation on Monday 25th November 2024 donated a JAWS software valued at P79,000 to the Botswana Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted. Jaws software is a powerful screen reader that aids individuals with visual impairments by enabling them to access a variety of digital content and have equal access to information. The software aids the blind and partially blind to easily navigate a world that is increasingly reliant on technology. In addition, a total of five (5) laptops worth P31,574.30 have been donated to the centre. The laptops will empower the recipients to work, study and connect with the world around them. These laptops, combined with JAWS software, will provide the tools necessary for their independence and skill development. The JAWS software comes with twelve (12) licenses for five (5) devices.
Furthermore, the BTC Foundation, in its quest to positively impact the community and transform lives, participated and sponsored the 4th Annual ICT graduates conference held under the theme ‘Smart Digital Citizens: Innovate and Create’ in Gaborone on Tuesday 26th November 2024. BTC sponsored the bronze package at P10,000.00. The Annual ICT graduates conference targets ICT graduates to stimulate, motivate and inspire them to use their acquired skills and knowledge to be innovative in producing solutions for any societal problems and issues identified while also nurturing themselves in the field.
