Bona Life’s decision to renew its sponsorship of the Betway Clash of Legends for a second consecutive year has been hailed as a powerful endorsement of one of Botswana’s most cherished football events.

The move underscores the growing recognition of preserving the nation’s sporting heritage while deepening community engagement through the beautiful game.

The life insurance company, which first took on the role of title sponsor in 2025, has once again pledged its support for the 2026 edition, set to take place on June 20 at the National Stadium. This year’s event promises an electrifying showdown, featuring legends from Township Rollers squaring off against their counterparts from Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates—a celebration of some of Botswana’s most iconic football figures.

For Bona Life’s Chief Executive Officer, Phatsimo Keakabetse, this partnership is far more than a commercial arrangement. “Clash of Legends aligns strongly with Bona Life’s values of resilience, discipline, teamwork and community development,” Keakabetse remarked. “Beyond football, the event celebrates individuals who have inspired generations and continue to play a positive role in society.” She emphasized the company’s belief in sport as a powerful tool for community engagement and social progress.

“As an insurance company, we understand the importance of protecting and investing in people’s futures, and sport provides a powerful platform to engage communities while promoting healthy lifestyles. Our continued support reflects our commitment to initiatives that bring people together and create lasting social impact,” she added.

Keakabetse further explained that sports sponsorship forms a vital part of Bona Life’s broader community investment strategy. “Whether it is football, golf or swimming, we support programmes that promote sportsmanship, personal growth, healthy living and youth development. Our involvement goes beyond brand visibility; it is about investing in people, encouraging positive lifestyles and contributing to the development of stronger and healthier communities across Botswana.”

Event organizers have warmly welcomed Bona Life’s ongoing support, describing it as a cornerstone for the event’s sustainability and growth. Sekhana Koko, one of the organizers, noted that Bona Life’s return as title sponsor affirms confidence in both the event’s concept and its impact.

“Having come on board as title sponsor in 2025 and choosing to continue that partnership this year demonstrates confidence in the concept, its impact and its growth potential,” Koko said. He highlighted that long-term sponsorships offer the stability needed to nurture sporting events and deepen their influence within communities.

“For us as organisers, Bona Life’s continued support provides stability and credibility. Sponsorships are most meaningful when sustained over time because they allow events to grow, improve the experience for supporters and participants, and create a lasting impact.”

Koko described the Clash of Legends as evolving into much more than a reunion match for retired footballers. “It is a celebration of Botswana’s football heritage, an opportunity to honour players who contributed immensely to the game, and a platform that reconnects supporters with some of their favourite football personalities,” he said.

Both organizers and sponsors agree that the event plays a crucial role in preserving the legacy of former players whose contributions helped shape Botswana football. By bringing these legends back onto the field, fans get to celebrate their heroes, while younger generations develop a deeper appreciation of the country’s rich football history.

Beyond its cultural significance, the Clash of Legends is also expected to boost the local economy, generating activity for vendors, service providers, media professionals, and others involved in the sports industry.

Koko believes Bona Life’s ongoing commitment sends a strong message about the role corporate Botswana can play in supporting sport. “Their decision to sponsor the event again this year shows that they see long-term value in the platform and believe in its ability to make a positive contribution to sport and society,” he said.
