Standard Chartered Bank Botswana has partnered with the University of Botswana once again by sponsoring P1, 000,000 towards the annual University of Botswana (UB) Marathon, reaffirming its commitment to promoting health, wellness, and education in Botswana. The flagship event, taking place on 7 September 2025 on the UB campus, is fast becoming a cornerstone of Botswanaโ€™s sports and community development calendar.

The sponsorship marks a significant milestone in the Bankโ€™s long-standing partnership with the University of Botswana. It underscores a shared vision to uplift local communities by supporting initiatives that foster holistic development through education, sport, and financial inclusion.

Speaking at the sponsorship announcement, Standard Chartered Bank Botswana Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mpho Masupe, stated: โ€œThis partnership is a reflection of our deep-rooted commitment to Botswana and its people. At Standard Chartered, one of our core values isย Lifting Participationย โ€” ensuring that we broaden access, create inclusive opportunities, and drive meaningful societal impact. Our decades-long relationship with the University of Botswana speaks to this commitment. We now take this partnership further, supporting health and wellness, and investing in the next generation through education.โ€

A key component of this yearโ€™s marathon is its contribution to the UB Scholarship Endowment Fund. Proceeds from the event will support the sponsorship of graduate students, empowering them to pursue academic excellence and make a meaningful impact in the nationโ€™s development.

As part of the sponsorship, Standard Chartered Bank will fund prize money for the 42.2km winners, as well as winners in the category of Runners Living with Disabilities.

University of Botswana Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris, also welcomed the collaboration, saying: โ€œWe are delighted to once again partner with Standard Chartered Bank Botswana, whose support has been instrumental in broadening our vision of transforming lives through education and community development. The UB Marathon is more than a race; it is a platform for raising critical funds for our Scholarship Endowment Fund and a rallying point for promoting wellness and unity. This sponsorship will help us scale the event to new heights and drive meaningful change in the lives of our students and society.โ€

The 2025 UB Marathon promises to be the most vibrant yet. Building on the success of last yearโ€™s edition, which saw over 2000 participants including international athletes, the university calls on running enthusiasts, university alumni and those who are looking to become more active, to register and make the event a success.
