Fuel Transporter’s rise reflects Southern Africa’s growth and challenges

In the heart of Gaborone’s industrial district, a fleet of fuel tankers emblazoned with the Sky Bridge Logistics (SBL) logo stands as a testament to Botswana’s burgeoning economy and the entrepreneurial spirit driving its growth. From humble beginnings in 2018 with a single tanker, Sky Bridge has blossomed into a key player in the region’s fuel transportation sector, a critical artery ensuring the flow of energy that powers industries and sustains daily life. Its story is not just about corporate expansion, but also about resilience, strategic innovation, and a vision for a future where local companies can compete and thrive on a global stage.

According to the Board chairman, Mr Leutlwetse Tumelo, Sky Bridge’s core business is the cross-border transportation of petroleum products, delivering fuel from loading points in South Africa, Namibia, and Mozambique to major depots in Botswana. The company serves clients such as Botswana Oil Limited, a number of Citizen owned fuel import companies, 2 International Oil Companies and a regional fuel supplier from South Africa, and has built a reputation for reliability and efficiency. This dependability is crucial in a region where consistent fuel supply is essential for economic stability. Botswana imports all of its petroleum requirements, with annual consumption reaching approximately 1.3 billion litres (21,000 barrels) per day. Sky Bridge plays a vital role in ensuring these needs are met.

Tumelo observes that the company’s success hinges on a differentiation strategy centered around technology. Sky Bridge has invested heavily in real-time tracking systems, in-truck cameras, and metered trucks to ensure the safety and quality of its deliveries. This commitment to technology not only enhances operational efficiency but also provides peace of mind to clients and insurers alike. In an industry where mishaps can be costly and dangerous, this technological edge has proven to be a significant advantage.

Sky Bridge’s growth has been entirely organic, a deliberate choice that reflects a commitment to sustainable expansion. From one tanker in 2019 to 28 in 2025, the company’s fleet has grown steadily, fueled by a combination of strategic contracts and strong financial partnerships. Initial organic funding in the formative years was done by Absa Bank Limited. Sky Bridge is a great beneficiary of the Wesbank CEEP funding for local companies which has seen a majority of units funded through this program. The strong partnership with Wesbank underscores the importance of local financial institutions in supporting the growth of citizen-owned businesses and the responisility that lies with local companies to maintain corporate governance structures and a proven financial performance that aligns and meets financial instution’s funding criterions.

For his part, the Managing Director, Mr Godiraone Des Olatotse observed that the company’s success also reflects broader trends in the Southern African road haulage industry. The South African trucking and logistics industry is poised for significant growth, with the sector projected to reach R260 billion by the end of 2025. Road freight accounts for a large percentage of goods moved in Southern Africa. Sky Bridge is well-positioned to capitalize on this growth, leveraging its strategic location and technological capabilities to expand its reach throughout the region.

However, Sky Bridge’s path has not been without its challenges. Cross-border fuel transportation in Southern Africa is fraught with difficulties, including infrastructure inadequacies, border delays, and security risks. Poor road conditions, port congestion, and rising costs of doing business all pose significant obstacles. Truck hijackings and cargo theft remain a persistent threat, requiring companies like Sky Bridge to invest heavily in security measures.

Despite these challenges, Olatotse said Sky Bridge remains committed to its vision of becoming a leading logistics player in the region. The company is focused on expanding its services to meet local market demand and is exploring the possibility of listing on the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) to raise capital. This move would not only provide Sky Bridge with the financial resources to fuel its growth but also signal its commitment to transparency and good corporate governance. Listed companies on the BSE are required to adhere to high standards of corporate governance and disclosure.

Both Tumelo and Olatotse connect on this point: Sky Bridge recognizes the importance of corporate governance and has established a functional Board of Directors comprised of experienced professionals. The Board’s expertise in finance, accounting, and logistics ensures that the company is guided by sound business principles and ethical practices. The company adheres to the “Apply or Explain” concept of King III Code of Governance, which has been the minimum requirement. This commitment to corporate governance is essential for building trust with investors, clients, and the broader community.

“Sky Bridge is also committed to social responsibility, with a focus on empowering women in the logistics industry. The company employs five women Bulk Vehicle Operators (BVOs), one of whom is the best-performing BVO in the company. This commitment to gender diversity is particularly noteworthy in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Women in Logistics – Africa (WILA) is one organization that is focused on advancing women’s leadership in the supply chain and logistics sector in Africa. Sky Bridge’s commitment to empowering women aligns with this broader movement,” said Olatotse.

Looking ahead, Sky Bridge faces both opportunities and challenges. The demand for fuel in Botswana and the surrounding region is expected to continue to grow, driven by economic expansion and increasing energy needs. However, the company must also navigate the challenges of infrastructure deficits, border delays, and security risks. To succeed, Sky Bridge will need to continue to invest in technology, build strong partnerships, and maintain its commitment to operational excellence.

Sky Bridge’s story is a microcosm of Botswana’s broader economic narrative. The country has made significant strides in recent decades to diversify its economy and promote citizen-owned businesses. Sky Bridge’s success is a testament to the effectiveness of these efforts, demonstrating that local companies can compete and thrive in a global marketplace. As Botswana continues to pursue its economic development goals, companies like Sky Bridge will play a vital role in driving growth and creating opportunities for its citizens.

In a region often characterized by challenges and uncertainties, Sky Bridge Logistics stands as a beacon of hope and a symbol of what can be achieved through resilience, innovation, and a clear vision for the future. As the company embarks on its next phase of growth, it will undoubtedly continue to play a critical role in powering Botswana’s economy and connecting the region to the global energy market.
