A Transformed Northern Trade Fair Anchors Growth Amid Botswana’s 60th Independence Milestone

The 2026 Northern Trade Fair arrives at a uniquely significant moment in Botswana’s national story. As the country marks 60 years of independence, the Trade Fair itself celebrates a major milestone, 30 years of driving business growth, enterprise development, and regional engagement.

For Business Botswana, this convergence is more than symbolic. It reflects a shared journey between national development and private sector growth, one in which platforms like the Northern Trade Fair have played a meaningful role in expanding opportunity, strengthening enterprise development, and enabling inclusive economic participation.

Together, these milestones reinforce a simple but powerful reality: Botswana’s economic transformation has been built through collaboration, enterprise, and sustained opportunity creation.

The Trade Fair stands as a reflection of three decades of consistent effort to empower businesses, particularly in the northern region. What began as a modest regional exhibition has evolved into a trusted national and increasingly regional platform, where businesses meet, ideas are exchanged, and partnerships are formed.Over time, it has become more than an annual event. It is now a strategic marketplace for business growth, investment dialogue, and market access. Speaking on this milestone, CEO Ms Tumi Mbaakanyi reflects “Reaching 30 years is not just about longevity. It is about relevance, evolution, and the ability to continuously meet the needs of the business community.”

In marking its pearl anniversary, the 2026 edition of the Trade Fair has been intentionally reimagined to move beyond traditional exhibition formats and place stronger emphasis on structured engagement, cross-border trade, and measurable outcomes. A key highlight is the Zambia–Botswana Business Forum, hosted in collaboration with the Zambia High Commission. This platform strengthens regional integration by opening new avenues for trade, investment, and business collaboration between the two countries.

The programme also includes curated Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Government (B2G) engagements, designed to facilitate direct interaction between investors, policymakers, and enterprises in a more focused and outcome-driven setting.

The Official Opening Ceremony will feature a high-level Fireside Chat, bringing together leaders from government and industry for candid, solutions-oriented dialogue on economic policy, investment climate, and competitiveness. To further enrich the experience, this year’s edition introduces several key elements:

  • Business Engagement Lounges, designed for structured networking and deal-making
  • A Gala Dinner, recognising excellence and celebrating participation
  • A Golf Tournament, providing informal executive networking opportunities
  • A Fun Park, enhancing inclusivity and offering a family-friendly experience

“We are intentionally shifting from showcasing to facilitating real business connections and outcomes,” Ms Mbaakanyi explains.

At its core, the Northern Trade Fair continues to serve as a critical platform for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Over the years, it has enabled SMEs to gain visibility, access wider markets, and engage directly with investors, customers, and partners. For many businesses, it has served as a launchpad, helping them test ideas, refine offerings, and scale beyond local boundaries. Beyond exposure, the Trade Fair also provides valuable market intelligence, peer learning, and industry insights that strengthen competitiveness and innovation. In this way, it remains a practical and powerful driver of enterprise development in Botswana.

The 30th edition is expected to generate significant economic activity across multiple sectors. In the short term, increased participation will stimulate demand for hospitality, transport, retail, and logistics, creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities. As host city, Francistown stands to benefit significantly from increased tourism, business activity, and visibility, further strengthening its position as a key economic hub in the northern region. However, the true value of the Trade Fair extends beyond the event itself. “The real impact is not just during the Trade Fair, but what continues afterwards, the partnerships formed, the deals concluded, and the investments unlocked,” says Ms Mbaakanyi.

The continued success of the Northern Trade Fair is anchored in strong collaboration across the public sector, private sector, development partners, and the media. These partnerships ensure that the event remains well-resourced, widely accessible, and impactful. From sponsors to institutional collaborators, each plays a vital role in strengthening the platform’s reach, quality, and relevance. “These partnerships reflect a shared commitment to economic growth and to positioning Botswana as a competitive player in regional and global markets,” Ms Mbaakanyi notes.

As Botswana celebrates 60 years of independence and the Trade Fair marks 30 years of impact, the 2026 edition represents both reflection and renewal. It is a reminder of how far the country has come, and a signal of what remains possible when platforms like the Northern Trade Fair continue to evolve with purpose. With its expanded focus on regional integration, structured engagement, and outcome-driven dialogue, the Trade Fair is positioned to play an even stronger role in shaping Botswana’s economic future.
