Luxury hospitality and wildlife conservation came together in an elegant fusion last week as Avani Gaborone Hotel & Casino unveiled its exclusive collection of house wines, a premium range designed not only to elevate the guest experience but also to contribute towards protecting Africa’s endangered wildlife.
Developed in collaboration with South Africa’s Huppenberg Wines in the Western Cape, the new collection introduces three carefully crafted wines named after some of the continent’s most iconic yet threatened species: The Rhino Rosé, The Pangolin Sauvignon Blanc and The Elephant Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot.
The launch event offered invited guests a sophisticated three-course wine tasting experience, allowing them to sample each wine while learning about the conservation story behind every bottle. The evening began with The Rhino Rosé, a refreshing and elegant wine characterised by delicate fruit aromas and a crisp finish. Guests were then introduced to The Pangolin Sauvignon Blanc, a vibrant white wine offering tropical fruit flavours balanced by lively acidity.
The tasting concluded with The Elephant Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, a rich full-bodied red featuring layers of dark fruit, smooth tannins and a long, refined finish. Far removed from the ordinary house wines commonly associated with the hospitality industry, Avani’s new range demonstrated exceptional quality, craftsmanship and balance, comfortably competing with many premium labels while complementing the hotel’s culinary offering.
When speaking during the launch, Avani Gaborone Hotel & Casino General Manager, Willem van Heerden, said the partnership with Huppenberg Wines was driven by a commitment to both quality and conservation. “Today we are launching our house wines, and we’ve done this in collaboration with Huppenberg Wines,” said van Heerden. “The reason why we’ve selected these partners is the quality of the product itself, but also because of the cause that Saving the Wild stands for.”
Beyond offering guests a premium wine experience, the collection carries a strong conservation message. A portion of proceeds from every bottle sold will support Saving the Wild, an organisation dedicated to combating wildlife crime through stronger legislation, improved regulation and practical anti-poaching initiatives across Africa. “Proceeds from the sales of our wines go towards Saving the Wild,” van Heerden explained. “They are an organisation that deals with, amongst other things, strengthening legislation and regulations around poaching.”
The initiative aligns with a growing trend within the global hospitality industry, where luxury experiences are increasingly being paired with environmental responsibility and sustainable tourism practices. The exclusive wines will be available across Avani properties in Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique and Lesotho, allowing guests throughout Southern Africa to enjoy products that celebrate both regional winemaking excellence and wildlife conservation.
Van Heerden also hinted that the collection could continue to grow as discussions with Huppenberg Wines progress. “We may introduce a fourth one at a later stage,” he revealed. “We’re still collaborating with the farm to see what they can produce for us.”
The launch forms part of the broader sustainability strategy of Minor Hotels, Avani’s parent company, which has invested in numerous conservation initiatives around the world. Among its flagship programmes is long-term support for elephant welfare in Thailand, reinforcing the group’s commitment to protecting endangered wildlife in the regions where it operates.
For Avani, the new collection represents far more than a hospitality offering. It is a statement that luxury can coexist with environmental responsibility, giving guests an opportunity to contribute to conservation simply by enjoying a glass of wine. With The Rhino, The Pangolin, and The Elephant, the hotel has created more than a signature collection. It has introduced an experience that celebrates African biodiversity, responsible tourism and premium craftsmanship.
As consumers increasingly seek meaningful travel experiences, Avani’s conservation-inspired wines demonstrate that every bottle can tell a story—one that supports the protection of Africa’s extraordinary wildlife while delivering a memorable taste of Southern African hospitality.
