Puma Energy Botswana has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to supporting Botswana’s aviation sector, highlighting the important role that reliable aviation infrastructure and fuel supply play in strengthening air connectivity, tourism, trade and broader economic development.

The remarks were made during the AviaDev Africa 2026 Gala Dinner in Gaborone, hosted by Puma Energy Botswana, which brought together government representatives and industry leaders from aviation, transport, tourism and energy sectors across the continent to discuss opportunities for improving air access in Africa.

Speaking at the event, Tendai Mwewa, General Manager of Puma Energy Botswana, said the country’s aviation ambitions are closely linked to its wider economic priorities, particularly tourism, which remains a key pillar of Botswana’s growth agenda.

“Here in Botswana, the opportunity is especially clear. Through its Air Access agenda, the country is strengthening connectivity, supporting tourism and trade, and positioning itself as a more competitive aviation hub for the region. For a country where tourism is such a vital part of the economy, better air access means more than additional flights. It means more visitors, greater investment, more jobs and wider economic benefits for communities across the country,” said Mwewa.

The aviation sector continues to show resilience across Africa despite a challenging global environment. According to IATA, African airlines recorded a 2.8% increase in passenger demand in April 2026, while load factors rose to 77.7%, underscoring the continent’s growth potential and the importance for continued investment in air connectivity.

For Botswana, improved aviation access has direct implications for tourism and economic development. Tourism remains a cornerstone of the national economy, accounting for an estimated 10% to 13% of national GDP and supporting more than 100,000 jobs, many of them in remote communities where tourism is a primary source of income and employment.

Delivering the keynote address, Botswana’s Assistant Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Honourable Keoagile Atamelang, emphasised the importance of collaboration between government, investors and the private sector to accelerate the development of Botswana’s aviation ecosystem.

“We recognise the important role played by Puma Energy in supporting this event and partnering with Botswana in our development journey. The partnership between Puma Energy and the Government of Botswana demonstrates how private sector investment and collaboration can contribute to national development objectives, stimulate economic activity, and support the growth of strategic industries such as aviation.” said Honourable Atamelang.

As a trusted aviation fuel supplier operating across Africa, Puma Energy continues to support the sector through safe and reliable fuel supply, operational expertise and investment in infrastructure that helps airlines and operators serve their markets with confidence.

As Botswana advances its aviation and tourism ambitions, Puma Energy Botswana remains committed to working with government and industry partners to strengthen foundations for growth, helping the country to improve connectivity, attract greater investment and reinforce its position as a gateway to Southern Africa.
