Huawei Technologies has launched the country’s first Smart Village site in Zutshwa. The launch ceremony was officiated by His Excellency, The President of the Republic of Botswana, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi. The Smart Village has come in form of a 30KVa photovoltaic solar power plant will provide clean, reliable energy to the village of Zutshwa.

Speaking during the launch ceremony, His Excellency, President Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi commended Huawei for launching the Smart Village Project which will bring transformative potential for the community. He also extended his gratitude to the Chinese Government and its entities for real results that have delivered to the people of Botswana. He explained that this project represents a significant milestone in advancing Botswana’s Vision 2036 and the National Development Plan (NDP), aimed at transforming the country into a knowledge-based economy and ensuring inclusive, sustainable development for all citizens.

The President revealed that this project themed Fostering Smart Education through Clean Energy was inspired by his meeting with Huawei at FOCAC in Beijing, showcases the shared commitment of the two entities. β€œThis project is crucial in addressing the challenges of rural development, particularly in the areas of education and economic empowerment. With the solar power plant, the introduction of digital connectivity will unlock new opportunities for local businesses, farmers, and entrepreneurs, allowing them to connect with larger markets and participate in the digital economy.” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ambassador of People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Botswana, Mr. Fan Yong commended the government and Huawei for the milestone attained. The Ambassador said the Smart Village Project is another example of the commitment of the Chinese government and Huawei Technologies represented by Huawei Technologies, to implementing the outcomes of the state visit and increasing the depth and breadth of our partnership.

He explained that the project will bring a lot of benefits to the people of Zutshwa. β€œAfter completion of the first phase, the Smart Village Project is expected to provide electricity and internet access to the village of Zutshwa. Speaking at the same event, Huawei President for Sub-Saharan Africa Multi-country, Phil Li explained the significance of the project, saying Zutshwa Smart Village addresses critical challenges faced by rural areas: limited power, and a lack of internet connectivity and educational resources. β€œWe are ready to work closely with all partners to bridge the digital gap and drive digital inclusion for an inclusive, sustainable and digitalised Botswana.” he said.

The Smart Village provides a comprehensive solution that combines clean energy, inclusive connectivity, and smart education. He commended the government for the support and revealed that Huawei was committed to working alongside the Government of Botswana to assist the country’s industrial digitization and ICT infrastructure development, especially in rural areas.
