GU appoints Makhwengwe

Makhwengwe is mindful to take this coaching job careful especially as he enters GU red zone.

Gaborone United Sporting club have concluded talks with former coach Philemon Makhwengwe about the need to succeed Nikola Kavazovic who tendered his resignation this week. The troubled Gaborone outfit‘s eagerness to bring a third coach this season has not been deflected even if the club management was divided on the way forward. Initially, the team had wanted to appoint either Daniel Nare or Stan Tshosane but the management felt Makhwengwe is the best fit as far as finances were concerned.

Makhwengwe coached GU last season and could only reach the finals of top 8 tournament. The possibility that GU, currently seventh in the Premier League under the interim stewardship of Khalid Neyomzima, may not mount a serious challenge  for this year’s Top 8 tournament, this  has not  been mooted as a potential obstacle to Makhwengwe’s return. While that would have serious and or little implications for the club's attempts to balance the books where finance is sometimes an issue, sources close to the negotiations have suggested Makhwengwe was never actually discouraged from joining the side, should the team fail to climb the league log again. Indeed, he could consider it an even greater challenge. But what remains a worry is that he comes to a club that is divided regarding his appointment.

Makhwengwe is mindful to take this coaching job careful especially as he enters GU red zone.  Principal among his concerns is the amount of power he would be permitted to wield at a side controlled by hard to please supporters and also financed by a no nonsense investor. The sudden fall out he had with this GU management of course turned a few heads, although he did not want to admit it at the time, he was equally frustrated that he made blunders he would not want to remember with these societal teams.   It remains to be seen whether the coach will accept the GU hierarchy, despite the acceptance that further significant squad strengthening will take place in the next coming transfer window.  Reinforcements however have been made in the central midfield, with the addition of a back-up goalkeeper.

Joel Mogorosi, the stalwart and offensive striker who has been instrumental to the rise and success of clubs like Mochudi Center Chiefs, has been recruited alongside Mara Moloi. While GU will only publicly address the coach situation in the not so distant future, discussions have been taking place for some time behind the scenes and the club has sounded out potential replacements for Kavazovic, who will be the second coach to leave the club before the season ends.

Makhwengwe‘s first assignment is against a club and a coach that cost him a job last season. he meets Jwaneng Galaxy and Miguel Da Costa on the second leg of the quarter finals of Mascom top 8. Galaxy are leading GU by a solitary goal.
