BOTESSA President Keorapetse Setlhare who attended the General Assembly together with his Secretary General Moreetsi Kediseng said-after an intense meeting between the two parties-they acquired the status which was being held by University of Botswana (UB) Sports Association since 1999.

The recent 36th General Assembly of Federation International Sport Universities (FISU) which was held in Turin, Italy, adopted a resolution to officially welcome Botswana Tertiary Students Sports Association (BOTESSA) as a member associate. The assembly which was attended by BOTESSA‘s President and his Secretary General, has officially been recognized to FISU, an international body which is also under the International Olympic Committee (IOC). FISU has a membership of 170 associations in which 30 are from Africa.

Some of the main agendas for this General Assembly of FISU was to; welcome new affiliates, adoptions of the proposals, approval of Technical and financial reports and lastly the elections of the new committee which will run the association from 2020 till 2024. In an interview this week with WeekendSport, BOTESSA President Keorapetse Setlhare who attended the General Assembly together with his Secretary General Moreetsi Kediseng said-after an intense meeting between the two parties-they acquired the status which was being held by University of Botswana (UB) Sports Association since 1999.

Setlhare further states that when they assumed their 4 year term, one of their main strategy plan was to be an affiliate of FISU and also Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU), which they acquired at the beginning of this year.

HOW WILL BOTESSA BENEFIT FROM FISU MEMBERSHIP

BOTESSA President said there are several benefits which Botswana will benefit from as they will now send a larger number of athletes to the 2020 FISU World University Championships, which will be held in China. This will improve the chances of Botswana athletes to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and other major competitions. He also noted that most of the African countries with GPA per capital 13,500 USD, have been benefiting a lot through FISU Help programme by participating in FISU activities at no costs and UB has also benefitted a lot through this programme in the past.

Setlhare also mentioned that by just being affiliates to FISU, BOTESSA will benefit a lot because the athletes will have an opportunity to benefit from developmental programmes which go beyond sports, as they will have opportunity to get scholarships e.g. Master’s Degrees in Sports Administration courses in Russia, courtesy of Russian Olympic Committee and Dream Together Masters Programme in Korea. “Active athletes can also be enrolled in Volunteers Leadership Academy, which is devoted to FISU Ambassadors’ programme for students to serve as a link between FISU and student communities by promoting university sports. The athletes will be able to participate in all FISU activities and have an opportunity to qualify for major activities like the Olympics because FISU is recognized by international Olympic committee,” he added. “One of the benefits of being FISU affiliate is that BOTSWANA will now have the voting rights in all FISU forums and administrators from all BOTESSA affiliates can also stand for any leadership positions in future.’’

BOTESSA was awarded certificate and a gold medal for their contribution in the development of University sports in Botswana, this after sending a team of 7 athletes in July 2019, who participated in FISU games in Napoli, Italy. The 4 by 400m Men’s relay qualified for the finals.
