Music is one of the many things that caused us to experience complex emotions and, while happiness is a worthwhile endeavour, there is validity, purpose, meaning in our sadness. Sure, I like to tap my toes to a happy tune as much as the next person, but tapping into the deep stuff can also be an extremely worthwhile and cathartic endeavour.

There is much meaning that can be derived from melancholy. In fact, sad music does not merely evoke sadness. Researchers have discovered that, sometimes, listening to sad music actually makes us feel happier, more romantic, less doomed and supports our emotional well-being. If we all felt a little more comfortable asking each other our favourite sad song recommendations, the world would be a better place. There is no shame in admitting that sometimes we need to put on a sad song to simply feel-even if it is about a situation completely unrelated to what we’re currently experiencing.

Following his absence from the music industry for quite a stretch, Orapeleng Nthoiwa, popularly known as Spiza really hits you in the gut with ‘’Annah’’, a heartfelt song about his struggles to get over the passing on of his mother. It is actually a tribute to his late mother, who I believe is named after her. ‘’you know honesty is the best technology, I am hurting, I miss my mother and the only way to let it out was through pen and paper. I was thinking with my ultra-aesthetic brain, trying to write the tune that will interconnect to lot of folks who are going through what I have experienced’’ he said in an interview with Weekend Life last week. A 25-year-old rose to his prominence in the past few years, after he toiled on a master piece with the ever controversial ATI dubbed ‘’who you are’’. The pair accumulated couple of smashes hence netting him the brand he is today. At the time, Spiza was a scholar at Mogoditshane Senior Secondary School, and managed to hit the airwaves with his shot ‘’the storm’’.  He subsidized enormously towards redefining the music industry in Botswana.

Annah is a refreshingly honest reflection of what it feels like losing somebody close to your heart. It is a reminder of the obstacles that come with such a gloomy experience, especially at a tender age. So sit down and take a moment to truly listen to and appreciate the lyrics of Spiza’s single, put it on repeat to feel a little better. In this heart-breaking song, he wishes his mamma may perhaps come around up and see him prosper. ‘’Ha nne botshelo bo rekwa, kabo ke reka ba ga Mama, gore a tle botshelong, gore a mpone ke godile, Im missing you, Im missing you, Robala ka kagiso Mama’’ Frankly speaking, Spiza’s song is a tear-jerking and I hope he finds strength to endure without his mother and be okay. Filled with blue words, the song became a viral sensation after posting this song on Facebook. Some of his followers shared it on their timelines to honor their deceased mothers.

Well, if you thinking of ways to honor the memory of a loved one, make a playlist of their favourite music, or music that reminds you of the. Turn their favourite clothes into a memory quilt or teddy bear, dedicate a bench in your local park to them, and reach out to someone else who is grieving. Do something your loved one would have enjoyed but never got to do, adopt a stretch of highway and pick up litter in their name, plate a tree, a rose, bush or a memorial garden and hold an essay contest in their name. It is also important to share favourite photos and memories about them with others who loved them too.
