Venson- Moitoi to join newly formed BPF

Publishing Date : 17 June, 2019

Serowe South legislator, Pelonomi Venson- Moitoi is likely to resign from Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) to join the newly formed Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF). Ever since news broke out that the former President, Lt gen Dr Ian Khama backed new political party will hatch, Venson-Moitoi has been mum on the issue.

A source very close to the developments at the newly formed party said Venson-Moitoi will ultimately join. Even though they could not divulge much details as to when the former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development will make her official position, it is expected that the move will materialize just before the party’s inaugural congress billed for Kanye in July.

“Venson- Moitoi has been mistakenly tagged as old and losing grip in politics but her experience can be of great importance in the growth and stability of the new party. She still commands a lot of respect even within the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) thus there is no way we will leave her out of the equation. At the moment we have no idea what position we will give her because the party will elect its interim committee at the July congress. However if she is interested in any position she can submit her name,”said the source.

Venson-Moitoi, a well- known ally of former President Ian Khama has kept many people guessing. After her decision to withdraw from the Kang leadership contest where she had challenged President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, Pelonomi Venson- Moitoi has kept a low profile. But she has been spotted on several occasions doing soup kitchens with former President Khama and Roseline Pansirah- Matshome, who is also very much involved with the new party.

Earlier last month, former President Ian Khama called a consultative meeting at his home village of Serowe where he engaged elders on his political future with the BDP but to the dismay of others, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi was not present at the meeting. At the second meeting which took place at Serowe showgrounds again Venson-Moitoi was a no show but when called she told WeekendPost that she is a bit held up in Gaborone hence she could not travel to Serowe.

Her no show would later attract the attention of the media who speculated that she has dumped Khama. Even though details are still sketchy, sources close to the developments said Vesnon-Moitoi may be given a significant role with Biggie Butale tasked with the role of front runner or Party President.

Roseline Pansirah- Matshome who was kicked out of the Communications and International Relations Committee of the BDP by President Masisi is likely to take the role of Party Chairman and Samson Moyo Guma who is currently in neighboring South Africa after fleeing the country in March just before the Kang Special Congress amid assassination claims is expected back in the country just before the inaugural congress.

Moyo Guma who is known for his spin doctoring role will also take a leading role with some alleging that he may be the party’s founding Secretary General. However Guma’s return to the country has attracted a lot of controversy as some suggest that his sudden relocation was a plan to avoid paying tax and might be locked behind bars upon his return to the country. Speaking from South Africa recently, the Tati East legislator confirmed that he will contest the 2019 general elections.
