Masa plays host to Urban Amarula, illy Coffee Experience

This past weekend, Masa Square Hotel played host to an urban Amarula and illy Coffee Experience, a first of its kind in Botswana.  The event saw the hotel’s in-house coffee shop Carlitos Cafe being transformed into an urban jungle under the theme “Safari in the City”.


The Amarula and illy Coffee Experience aimed to communicate the internationally renowned African cream liqueur and Italian coffee’s distinctive versatility and pampered reveler’s taste buds with mouth-watering creamy cocktails, coffees, desserts and sumptuous meals.
Masa Square Hotel General Manager, Hayden Bowl shared with WeekendLife that they wanted to give Amarula consumers an opportunity to enjoy the brand not just by pouring it over ice but experiencing its versatility in cocktails, coffees and even the unconventional savory meals.


“The brand has so much to offer that we would like our consumers to explore.  The marula flavor is so unique and so closely bound up with the mystery of Africa that it remains a very compelling offering,” he explained. Inspired by the bountiful flavours tasked to her, Executive Chef Melissa Ngoni created a masterpiece of Amarula and illy Coffee inspired meals, that included their signature Masa Square Hotel Tiramisu, sticky and crispy Asian wings, Amarula homemade ice cream and the Chef’s special for the day Amarula Chicken Liver Vol Au Vents.


Commenting on the menu, Ngoni said, “When deciding on how to pair foods and beverages, acidity and strength both play key factors. Ideally, you’d want the level of acid in both the meal and the drink to be comparable and neither one should overpower the other. I landed my imagination of how the off-note taste on chicken livers can be addressed, by a liqueur beverage, and without wasting any time I got into my cooking mood.”


The hotel once again committed to collaborating with various stakeholders in the Botswana creative and culinary industry in order to spoil event attendees to an unforgettable showcase. These partners include local mixologists Galaxy Liquids, Kalahari Chocolates. Local food blogger Lunch with Bae took over the Hotel’s Instagram page to share all highlights pre and during event. Air Botswana and the Hotel’s sister company Chobe Marina Lodge.
