Philemon Makhwengwe’s dream to set and leave a buccaneering tone at Gaborone United (GU) is being repelled by some senior players who have told him to resist the temptation of fielding youngsters if he still wants to save his job- WeekendSport has been told.

Sources claim that the coach once had a torrid time when players decided to confront him two weeks ago at Serowe Sports Complex dressing room. GU were hosted by Mahalapye’s BR Highlanders but eventually won the encounter by 2-1. A couple of senior players now believe that Makhwengwe is leading the team down the mountain. In fact, player power is mushrooming at the heart of GU with the belief that the coach is out of his depth.

It is said players like Dirang Moloi and Captain Alphonse Modisaotsile have warned the coach to start fielding experienced players to save the club from drowning. However, this is ironic to some club members who believe that Makhwengwe has punched over their weight by taking the club to the finals of Mascom Top 8 tourneys with limited resources despite setting an unwanted record. GU became the first team to fail to score at the finals of the top 8 since its inception in 2012. Before that, the club had also reached the finals twice, but has always won it.

As things stand, GU is battling to survive in the top 8 bracket. The club is on the sixth spot having amassed 39 points from 27 games. But in all spheres of football reasoning, statistics speak better for Makhwengwe. When he came in, GU was languishing at the bottom of the league table with only 3 points. He has won many games on the road with a small budget. When reached for clarity, Makhwengwe said he is in total control of the situation and players are coping well with his philosophies. He however condemned interference that flows from some supporters saying it is ‘uncalled for’.

“I am in control of the situation at GU, I am a disciplinarian, and no player is bigger than the team that I lead. Even with Moloi, don’t be misled, he is a senior player but he respect me very much, I have coached him from way back, he understands me well,” he explained.
But it clear that Makhwengwe’s stock has risen remarkably since coaching the club. His contract is about to expire and already there is talk that his stay will not be renewed.

When asked about his future at GU, the gaffer said, “I am sorry I do not discuss contract issues with third parties, my chairman or club director are better placed to answer your question.” All the while, GU is advised to take this coaching issue serious. Sources say Makhwengwe is a wanted man. He is said to be considering offers from numerous premier league clubs together with those from first division outfits.

Makhwengwe does not believe the club’s top goal scorer Kapamba can play alongside new recruit JJ Ramatlhakwane.  He is of the view that both are selfish and one has to substitute the other. He might be vindicated. The two played together in different matches of the league and were often times caught accusing the other when a chance went bagging. It might be that Da Phil has never comprehensively drilled players like JJ, but he understands well the abilities of others like Moloi and Shoes Seosenyeng.

Most interesting is the fact that Da Phil retains much favour on young blood. This injects fear on the old crop but the former BFA technical education officer faces opposition of many kinds should he bench them. It’s his influence versus GU player power. Makhwengwe made a second return to GU last year. On his first stay, he won the FA cup in 2012 that was under the banner of Coca- Cola.
