Publishing Date : 08 April, 2019

Local mobile and internet giant Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) is looking forwards to working closely and developing youth owned initiatives. In the past the telecommunications company has been working closely with the youth supporting them to develop and grow their business ideas. Notable projects are the BTC Phonebook Cover Competition 2018 which had young people designing the phonebook cover which was ultimately won by young creative Soft Montshiwa.

Another youth initiative sponsored by BTC is the P10 000 and a one-year free 4 Mbps ADSL service made to Lesego Senjoba who was the best Engineering and Technology student at BIUST in 2018. “Investment in human capital is not just in line with our mandate of making telecommunications available to all at BTC but is also part of the National Human Resource Development Strategy. What made our network the widest in and fastest in the market are our people and their drive for growth. Youth like Senjoba remind us that indeed we have a bright future in the industry and in our country,” said BTC Managing Director Anthony Masunga when he handed Senjoba her prize.

“Our aim is to empower the youth to innovate, grow their business ideas, create and curb unemployment . This will also lead to boosting the country’s economy,” said BTC’s corporate communications and public relations manager, Golekanye Molapisi. He noted that since BTC is a local company and the brainchild of Batswana, part of its role is to impart knowledge, empower the youth and help them grow both personally and professionally..  Molapisi noted that there is always a window for young innovative entrepreneurs  to approach the telecommunications company with their ideas.

“Working with other stakeholders like the Botswana Innovation Hub, we are looking forward to empower youth owned projects in different sectors from the arts to ICT, remember the goal is to help them generate income for themselves and create employment for others”. Some of the projects BTC has been engaged with include the Girls in ICT project in Masunga where the Company set up a computer laboratory with 20 computers and Wi-Fi .Similarly the Corporation established another computer lab at Okavango Brigade with Wi-Fi equipped with 10 computers for use by youth.
