Zakhem sponsors GU supporters

Business mogul who is also a close associate of Gaborone United, Nicholas Zakhem, has agreed to sponsor 5 of the club’s country wide supporter’s branch ahead of the crucial Mascom top8 final.


GU will lock horns with Jwaneng Galaxy tonight at Francistown Sports Complex. The Money Machine as the team is affectionately called by legions of its followers are determined to offer connoisseurs of the local tournament the glorious opportunity to see a fresh page being turned in its 8 year old history. GU will become the first team to win the cup for the third time, should they triumph against Galaxy. However, If Galaxy prospects on Saturday night depend on rotating their squad; GU will be full of hope for a productive occasion.


Over the years the Gaborone side has waged many a war against the odds but a spectacular effort is now called for on a night when there will be adequate reward for such pugnacity. Sensing this moment, Zakhem is expected to spend close to P14 000 for GU followers to reach Francistown stadium.


Serowe branch needs P2000 while Maun committee is expected to be offered P1.400. From Molepolole, an estimated P 2000 will be paid. Letlhakane branch needs only P1000 while Gaborone branch, as the largest committee have asked P7 000. Zakhem says the braches have asked for financial assistance and he will dully help. Zakhem’s continued assistance to GU further fuels speculation that he intends to turn the club into a well administered club.


The Lebanese born business guru has long proposed that he loan the club money amounting to P 700 000 first to pay for the team liabilities that have become overdue but payable. The other money was to be used for preparation for this season. However, this loan was to come under somewhat stringent conditions.  Zakhem wanted the club to hold a special meeting within 30 days or within any period of time mutually agreed by both parties for the purposes of endorsing some certain resolutions.


One condition is that Zac construction through its principal, Nicholas Zakhem takes over management of the affairs and running of the team for a minimum period of 15 years. Zac also wanted the club to make a resolution that all management decisions shall be taken solely by him and the role of the executive committee be advisory. The proposal indicated that management decisions shall include player recruitment, coaches and administrative staff together with making decisions on behalf of the club.


Zac also pledges to ensure that the club is professionally run through recruitment of players, coaches and other staff. He shall ensure that all staff, players are paid well on time and in accordance with their contract of employment and to avoid negative publicity of the club. Zac also promises to take care of general welfare of players, including finding accommodation for them. 


To further demonstrate his seriousness, Zac promises to buy a 60 seater coach with amenities such as toilet, air corns and Television within the first three years of the agreement. In a possibility that the club secures a piece of land, Zac offers to construct a mini stadium to be used as a training facility and further be used for hosting home games. The offer also includes building a club house.
