The partnership between Botswana Football Association (BFA) and their new technical sponsors, Umbro is seen as one sided affair. In fact, WeekendSport establishes that the contract that came into effect beginning of February is not entirely different from the one signed in 2013 under former leader, Tebogo Sebego’s administration.

The Umbro deal, according to available information was primary retained to address the long standing issue of supply. Although it is observed that Umbro experienced similar problems six years ago, just as All Kasi did, BFA hopes that the technical sponsors will be competent this time around. In the new contract, Umbro will design and supply all the national teams with apparels.  It is agreed that Umbro will sell and distribute the replicas at a price they deem fit.

This, reports say, is not a profit making scheme on the side of BFA. That is why BFA has ceded all the selling rights to Umbro. However, because of BFA logo printed on left side of the replica, the association is set to claim 2 percent royalties in the first year. The percentage is expected to increase as the contract grows old. Both parties have penned a three year deal with an option to renew for further two years.

In 2013, BFA‘s benefit from all sold Umbro replicas was between 8 and 9 percent. However, there were frustrations along the way as the sponsor was seen to be taking long to deliver. BFA, however, is confident of better days ahead. “The BFA have been making strides in the right direction to improve football within the country, as well as the performances of the National Team. Umbro and Botswana’s recent resurgence in African football makes for an exciting partnership.

Umbro will be the exclusive global technical partner of the national team, supplying the Zebras playing squad with best-in-class authentic competition, training, and off field apparel. Umbro will also supply the technical and management staff with Botswana FA branded apparel. Supporter gear will be available for Botswana fans to purchase,” the association said. It is now clear that in the last seven years, both All Kasi and Umbro have been competing to dress national teams.

An interesting case even emerged after the two rubbed shoulders during the tendering phase. It was reported that international sports-wear was beaten by the local clothing company  All-kasi in as far as tendering points of sponsorship were concerned. According to tender documents, reviewed on May of 2013, the Lobatse based company garnered 19 points of out of possible 30. That kept All Kasi as directed by Ludo Kemoeng and Barnes Maplanka ahead of Umbro who came second with 10 points.

The documents showed that Umbro would have lost the bid had it not by the ultimate error committed by All-Kasi. The former technical sponsors had drawn a proposal for partnership with the association, something that was outside tender requirements.
