The much anticipated Gaborone International Music and Culture Week otherwise known as GIMC is finally here. The event is by far, the biggest music experience in the country. It gives fun lovers the chance to see some of the world’s best performers live on stage.

Once again, the epic annual event will be held at the Gaborone National Stadium, expectations are that the main event will cause the venue to be packed. The organisers have held to their tradition of staging various segments of the fun event at different other venues.
The weeklong event is held to celebrate Gaborone and the culture of Batswana through music, festival, comedy, poetry, jazz, choral, cultural performances etc.

It caters for everyone’s unique tastes so that no one is left out during the week’s events. Only the best international, regional & local artists are chosen to perform at GIMC in order to afford good quality performances for the attendees to get their money’s worth. The 2017 edition of the GIMC was headlined by renowned Jonathan Butler, and this year’s show will be signature tuned by yet another internationally acclaimed artist, Musiq Soulchild.

Considered one of Africa’s biggest music and culture festival, GIMC starts today (Saturday) and will run until Saturday 8th September 2018. Established in 2014, GIMC is now turning 5 years and the organizers of the festival have gone all out to make this year’s episode bigger and better.

MUSIQ SOULCHILD – WILL HE PULL THE CROWDS?

Philadelphia born Taalib Johnson known as Musiq Soulchild needs no introductions, he was among a crop of R&B artists who arrived during the 2000s with no debt to the flashy and sexually aggressive sounds that prevailed throughout the preceding decade.
The Philadelphia- born muso grew up in a household that provided him with an education in '70s soul.

Additionally inspired by the contemporary likes of D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Donny Hathaway, he applied his musical upbringing to a love for non- commercial hip- hop and refined his romantic and affable everyman style across a string of six major- label albums, four of which went either gold or platinum in the U.S. One of steadiest singers and songwriters in his field, he earned 11 Grammy nominations evenly spread across a decade. In 2010, he stretched out stylistically and went independent without wavering from his soul base.

GIMC’S RICH SHORT HISTORY

GIMC has previously hosted Grammy Award Winning artists from USA in the likes of Kirk Whalum, Jonathan Butler, as well as top comedians like Mr Ibu from Nigeria, Black Coffee, Cassper Nyovest, DJ Fresh just to name a few. The event has grown from strength to strength and has featured any and all top artists in Botswana. GIMC 2018 will list 50 artists covering the entire music and arts genre, a commendable feat that is welcome in local arts.

Other acts on the lineup include Sereetsi and The Natives, Samantha Mogwe, Bokani Dyer Trio, Motlha and will be preceded by Champagne Picnic, Theatre, Poetry, Choral, Comedy and Festival. During the whole GIMC week the city remains abuzz with activity, catering for different tastes, from music and poetry to comedy. This aim behind the concert is to sell Gaborone as a tourist attraction area and brand it as the diamond city. The event organizer Fish Pabalinga said this encourages locals and expats alike to get a diverse perspective of this self-effacing city.
