Makhwengwe flirts with GU

Publishing Date : 31 July, 2018

Gaborone United is reported to be in talks with its former coach, Philemon Makhwengwe about the possibility of succeeding Rudolph Zapata as the season commences. It is said GU wants to reconcile with Makhwengwe and recreate a working relationship that will take the team back to its glory days.

But those in the thick of things say the troubled Gaborone giants ‘eagerness to reunite with the coach next season may be deflected as the club is divided on the way forward. It is said ‘DR Phil’ as he is known wants GU management to reverse all the transfers that have been made because he was not part of them. Despite the club's very secret courting of its former coach, there remains the possibility that Stan Tshosane could compete for the post as he too,  retains adoration at Moyagoleele.

It is not yet clear if Makhwengwe will gladly accept the GU offer, but what remains unchallenged is the fact that he has proven his mettle before and having promoted Prisons XI to the elite league is just the icing on the cake. However, some sources say the issue of the coach will difficult to conclude given the crisis at GU.

That, together with the possibility that the team may not mount a serious challenge for this year‘s league honors, have been mooted as a potential obstacle to Makhwengwe 's return. While that would have serious and or little implications for the club's attempts to balance the books where finances is always an issue, sources close to the negotiations have suggested Makhwengwe on one hand would actually not be discouraged from joining the side should the team choose him as the competent coach. Indeed, he could consider it an even greater challenge.

Nevertheless there are other obstacles that still need to be cleared if his desire to return to the club materializes. Principal among his concerns is the amount of power he would be permitted to wield at The Reds, reports maintain. If he is to return, Makhwengwe would have to accept the existing structure in place at the club particularly that a lot has changed after his departure. This is not the same Gaborone United that was run and administered without politics by a society that now demands quick results.

It remains to be seen whether the coach will accept the GU hierarchy, despite the acceptance that further significant squad strengthening will take place in the next few days before the new league commences. While GU will only publicly address the coach situation once the issue with ownership is complete, discussions have been taking place for some time behind the scenes. The club has also sounded out potential replacements if Makhwengwe spurns them. Makhwengwe is the last coach to win the Coca- Cola Cup with GU in 2012.
