Publishing Date : 23 July, 2018

The annual Selebi Phikwe Softball Extravaganza Tournament which was played over President's Day Holidays was this year graced by invited teams from neighbouring South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Bats and Balls Sports Academy from Zimbabwe participated in both men and ladies category while Vaal University of Technology (VUT) from South Africa brought to Selebi Phikwe a men’s team which finished in fourth position winning a prize money of P20,000. Bats and Balls finished ninth and tenth in ladies and men’s category respectively and received a consolation prize of P10, 000 each to also go home P20, 000 richer.

The participation of invited team from foreign countries is meant to enhance the competitiveness of the tournament as well as growing the Extravaganza brand beyond Botswana’s borders. The Softball Extravaganza tournament brings teams from the Northern and Southern parts of the country against each other for a coveted cash prize P60, 000 and a trophy. The inclusion of these teams will also play an important role in positioning Selebi Phikwe as a premier sporting town as it establishes itself for a niche market in sport and events tourism, an ideal facilitated by SPEDU.

The Northern part of the country was represented Comets, Scramblers, Carats and Sua Raiders in the ladies category while Comets and Carats also represented in the Men’s category together with Rail Giants, Rebels. Southern teams were Wells, Vikings, Police IX and UB Giants in the ladies category while Police IX, Wells, Bears and Gatalamotho represented the South in the men’s category. With the absence of men’s BDF I9, their arch rivals, Wells International from Jwaneng dominated the tournament as both its teams won Gold. Both teams pocketed P60, 000 each and awarded Gold medals and a trophy.

In the men’s category, runners-up, Gatalamotho received P40, 000 cash prize and silver medals after a 10-0 beating by Wells. Rail Giants headed back to Mahalapye P30, 000 richer after finishing third while Vaal University of Technology finished fourth to be awarded P20, 000. Police IX received P18, 000 for the fifth position while the sixth and seventh position went to Comets and Bears, receiving P15, 000 and P13, 000 respectively. Carats finished eighth to get P12, 000 while Rebels and Bats and Balls from Zimbabwe finished ninth and tenth to get a P10, 000 each as consolation prize.

In the ladies category, Police ladies were the runners-up while Vikings and Carats finished third and fourth respectively. The host, Comets finished on fifth position while new comer, UB Giants occupied the sixth spot. Another new comer, Sua Raiders came in seventh while Scramblers finished eighth and Bats and Balls in ninth position. Both men and ladies category received the same amount of prize money, medals and trophy.

The tournament was sponsored by Komatsu, Estate Construction, Rassie Travel and Tours as well as Local Enterprise Authority (LEA). SPEDU in conjunction with Selebi Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) are the main facilitators of the tournament and they form part of the Local Organising Committee (LOC).
