Pan- African beauty brand switches to green packaging

Publishing Date : 04 July, 2018

Nokware Skincare has launched its new bamboo packaging as a response to growing concerns of plastic waste. The organic skincare brand founded by two young women - Thato Tau from Botswana and Tutuwa Ahwoi from Ghana- is carving its place as an inclusive ‘Pan African’ beauty brand with the warm slogan ‘From Earth, To You’.

According the two ladies the new bamboo packaging is a fitting addition to the brand’s unique packaging which makes use of repurposed gourd plants (from which their calabash packaging is derived), repurposed jute sacks from cocoa bean farmers and raffia from palm trees.  Tau said they wanted to raise awareness that plastic is not the only option available for packaging and that all around, nature has provided everyone with materials that when repurposed, can make for beautiful, natural packaging.

“The cosmetic industry accounts for an estimated 2.7 billion plastic bottles that end up in landfills and on our shores every year. It is predicted that the ocean will contain more plastics than fish by 2050 if we do not change our consumptive behaviours regarding plastic. This is why as Nokware Skincare, we have chosen to place environmental responsibility at the forefront of our brand through the use of sustainable, repurposed packaging,” explained Tau.

Nokware recently participated in the New Venture Competition for African Start-Ups at Harvard Business School in Boston, USA, where 10 African start- ups were invited to pitch their businesses before a panel of judges and esteemed guests at the event. They were awarded the prize for the company that most impacts their community by Sundial Brands, owners of international beauty brand, Shea Moisture.

The brand’s skincare range currently offers 4 variations of African Black Soaps, Shea Body Butters and Natural Oils. The products are available online on the brand’s online shop, and at SuperChem Pharmacy in Masa Square (Gaborone). Nokware Skincare is an organic skincare brand that sources its ingredients locally and packages its products sustainably. Nokware [“Knock-Wah-Ri”] means “Truth” in Twi, a Ghanaian dialect. Originating from Africa’s rich traditions and resources, Nokware is a 100% organic skincare brand committed to providing you with a blend of the finest natural ingredients sourced from sustainable local farms in West Africa.

Looking back, Nokware was unofficially born in 2014 in Paris – the city of fashion and beauty where two African girls struggled to find skin care products that worked for them. This is where the dream was born; Tau had left Botswana with nothing and met with Ahwoi in Paris where they were reading for their Masters Degrees in International Business and Fashion & Luxury Management respectively. “Throw two African girls into a foreign city, with a foreign language in a school where they’re the only two black people and what happens? Friendship becomes inevitable,” they said.

The birth of Nokware is a simple story of friendship turned sisterhood, cultural differences turned cultural sharing, and the search for flawless skin turned passion, business and girl power. “We’re excited to share our journey with you! Your healthy skin journey may have just begun, but together we’ll all get there by using only ingredients that earth intended for us”.

They are excited to share that people will have the opportunity to experience the love that went into making Nokware providing nothing but a healthy skin, healthy living and unforgettable memories along the way.  To find out more about Nokware Skincare and products, visit  www.nokwareskincare.com
