4.5 million pula for 5th Hamptons festival

Publishing Date : 05 March, 2018

Organisers of the 2018 Hamptons Jazz Festival have assured revellers that the show will go on despite a communiqué from Gaborone City Council (GCC) last month that it was revoking the licence it had issued for the event.

This week, Debbie Smith revealed to the media that the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development (MYSCD) had given them the go ahead to continue with the show. Smith said they were pulling all stops to ensure the event will be a success, come 24 March 2018 at Duma Grounds. She said the Ministry gave them the go ahead to continue with the logistics while they sorted out their issues.

The GCC pulled a shocker on the show organisers, revellers and event promoters mid February when it announced that the licence it had issued the show organisers was erroneous. The Council further advised the organiser to seek assistance from the MYSCD with the issue. The GCC had cited that it was not authorised to issue licences on loud music beyond midnight unless an event is held in a sound proof facility.

“This came as a massive shock to us, however the issue is being sorted while we have been given the go ahead by the Ministry,” said Smith. She also revealed that all the international acts have been fully paid and Billy Ocean will be arriving with a band crew of at least 16 members. Smith also told members of the media fraternity that at the moment the show costs are already sitting at 4.5 million pula. At the same event, South African Express also revealed a five year sponsorship of the event which will see all the international acts been flown into the country by the SA Express airline.

Headliners Billy Ocean and Bhudazza have already taken to their respective social media platforms to confirm their attendance via videos. Electric entertainer, Amanda Black, the Mankayi siblings (Nathi & Amanda), have also done confirmation videos. On the local front, Nnunu Ramogotsi, Socca Moruakgomo, ATI, Thabang Garogwe, Nnunu Ramogotsi & Thato Jessica have all confirmed their attendance via videos posted on their social media platforms and on the Hamptons pages, much to the joy of the fans.
