Publishing Date : 08 January, 2018

Botswana Softball Association (BSA) will next week Wednesday send a team to South Africa for the Women’s Softball African World Cup Championships qualifiers in Attridgeville, Softball Park from the 12th -14th of this month.

The competition is slated for Chiba, Japan later in August this year. The nations that will battle for a slot in Japan are South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Botswana. The local lasses are the best ranked team in Africa and are ranked 17th in the world with 180 points, with rivals South Africa on position 21 with 40 points.

Botswana according to rankings stands a better chance to represent Africa at the international competition as it has always qualified with ease. However, this time around things may pan out differently as other nations are preparing for the 2020 Olympics and may prove to be tough customers for Botswana who in the past years has dominated all categories.

Botswana will begin the quest with a fixture against Kenya on Friday. From there the local lasses will face Zimbabwe which has proven its strength on Junior teams before facing Lesotho. The local girls will then take on Tanzania in game 12 of the tournament. On day three Botswana which is made up of players plying trade in the national Bofinet Softball League will then take on Uganda before closing the campaign with South Africa. The tournament will use points system and the best team will qualify for the Worlds.

“We have assembled a good team and expect a tough competition as every country would want to make it to the World Championships, especially those who have not been taking part. Traditionally, Africa has always been represented by Botswana and RSA at the world stage,” the association mouthpiece, Kelebogile Seitei said.

The local team which reported for camp yesterday (Friday) will depart on Wednesday and is made up of the following players. Wangu Gondo, Malebogo Ramaphane, Akanyang Lawrence (Titans). Iponeng Molapong, Gaanagwe Moagi, Kelebogile Lesesere (Wells). From Police the team has called Bonolo Molefe, Othusitse Olatlheng, Oreabetswe Mojeremane, Kagiso Lowang, Moshabe Botsile and Onalenna Ntibi. Panthers are represented by Goitseone Munyadzwe, Boitshwarelo Sefo, Lesego Rankwala and Lereng Mokgotle.

Katlego Thande (Dinare), Gotlamang Sixpence, Irene Mutunge (Vikings), Lesego Ditau (Ghetto Yankees). Balekele Tomeletso and Galeboe Mfolwe from Rail Giants complement the 23 contingent. The team will be under the mentorship of Scramblers coach Bobby Khupe assisted by Aiko Nakamura, Disang Selemogwe and Tshepho Letsholo.

Ever since the arrival of Bofinet as sponsor, the national teams have been doing well with the national softball team including a new chapter in sports history after advancing to the playoffs for the first time at the WBSC Men’s World Softball World Championship in Canada last year.
