Publishing Date : 08 January, 2018

Botswana Police Service has from December 24th 2017 to January 02 2018 recorded 80 cases of rape nationwide. Assistant Commissioner of Police and Public Relations Officer Dipheko Motube has revealed that the bulk of the incidents took place on Christmas Day and were mostly associated with alcohol.

“The perpetrators were mostly strangers. There is really a lot of networking and leisure during this time, and people have a tendency of exposing their security. And the victims are aged between 18 and 40 years.”  On road fatalities, Motube said that at least 29 people died in road accidents from December 18, 2017 to January 02, 2018, with 24 fatal crises.  The areas that were mostly affected are the south central and north central division, which covers places among others the greater Gaborone, Ramotswa, Mochudi, Selebi-Phikwe, Serowe and Letlhakane. However, Motube said, “in overall we generally had a peaceful season except for a few nasty incidents. Batswana heeded our call to take charge of their own personal security and that of their property.”
