Phuthego returns to BFA

Publishing Date : 09 October, 2017

Author : MOSIMANEGAPE TSHOSWANE

Botswana Football Association’s obsession with recycled labour is far from being tamed. The association, which has consistently received public backlash for recycling staff, has re-employed Phuthego Setete as a regional coordinator.

Phuthego who is the former premier league General Manager, assumed his duties on the 1st of October, but the duration of his contract had not been established at the time of going to print. As BFA Regional Coordinator, his primary role is to ensure that BFA regions have strong technical administrative and financial support in order to develop football from the grassroots level. BFA’s last week meeting with German Christoph Rocholl, in part, meant that Phuthego will work hand in hand with him.

BFA has 17 regions across the country, and all have been notified about the appointment of Phuthego. When approached to confirm his selection as the BFA coordinator, Phuthego flatly refused to talk to this publication saying BFA acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mfolo Mfolo is better placed to answer all the questions.  “I am not sure I am the right person to answer such questions, please refer all to Mfolo, he might have all the answers,” he said.Roughly two years ago, Phuthego was labelled the black sheep of the association and was nearly barred from entering Lekidi football centre while he continued to demand his outstanding dues after he parted ways with the league house.  But it appears that emotions have cooled down after the new regime came into office last year.

This is why some quarters believe that he played a pivotal role in unseating Tebogo Sebego from the BFA presidency last year. They believe that his appointment is not surprising as he is now being deservedly awarded. Phuthego who was replaced by Mamelodi was fired in August 2012. His became evident when RP Production’s relationship with the league was painfully strained. He was accused of having a cordial relationship with the broadcasting company.

To further bring down the former Satmos administrator, fingers of blame pointed towards him for failure to offer his staff at BPL employment contracts. He was also accused of having made a careless transaction sometime in 2005 with Enigmatic Ltd which traded as Pula Sports Consultancy. That move allegedly left the Premier League in debt. This subsequently led to the league disregarding the idea of having full time consultants.

Phuthego joined the Premier League sometimes in 2005 deputising the then Administrative Secretary of the league Comfort Ramatebele. At the time, his position was better known as the league secretary. It was in 2007 that he ascended to the post of Administrative secretary when his senior, Ramatebele, parted with the league under a cloud of animosity.

In 2008, when Botswana Telecommunication Corporation (BTC), trading as be-MOBILE, first came on board as league title sponsors, Phuthego was elevated to the post of General Manager which he was ‘forced’ to leave after a cold spell of war that reached the industrial court. He would later resurface at Township Rollers as their first general manager before succumbing to prolonged illness that eventually forced him to leave the job.
