German for BFA advisory role

Publishing Date : 03 October, 2017

Author : MOSIMANEGAPE TSHOSWANE

Christoph Rocholl, a German football scientist is expected to hold talks with the Botswana Football Association (BFA) about him becoming a football advisor for the association. This comes on the heels of BFA’s anticipated move to roll out its football development plan.

The German sports advisor is expected to stay in the country for about two months- a period during which the association will be footing all the bills.  Rocholl’s major roles, according to BFA sources, will be to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study on football development that can yield results over a long period of time. He is also expected to play a telling role in assisting coaches on new methodologies that will assist with football development training.

The shrewd administrator‘s credentials are well documented particularly in the South American region where he stayed in countries like Costa Rica and Honduras. “Rocholl is a Sports Scientist who works for the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has worked in Costa Rica in the 1980's and helped to develop the youth in general and building academies in particular. He has been credited with the rise of Costa Rica who recently made it into the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Brazil (2014). In 2009, he was tasked with developing grassroots football and coach education in Honduras.

This seasoned Technical Expert has assisted emerging football in nations like India in creating development policy’s and plans tailored for their skills, abilities and strengths,” reads part of his credentials as outlined by BFA documents seen by this publication.
“We will be relying on him to give us proper advice about how we can perfectly administer our football development plan, but I think it is pertinent to talk about such issues after we have thoroughly dealt with other stakeholders,” BFA technical director Matshidiso Kowa, said.

The German is expected to leave a trail of lasting impressions that mirrors that of Ghanaian football technical expert Ben Koffie. The late football administrator once came to Botswana to set structures that would later churn out massive young talent for the country. Players in the mould of Diphetogo Selolwane, Mogogi Gabonamong, Mpho Mabogo, to mention but a few, sprung to fame because of the Ghanaian’s input. The MacLean Letshwiti administration is known to be vociferous and passionate about football development, and the coming of the German is in part, answering the need.

Football development from grass level is anticipated to stabilize Botswana football on the international stage. More often than not, the Senior National Team is seen to be devoid of talent largely because of incapacitated structures. FIFA, a world football governing body is steadfast on football development. During previous years, the busting football body has been donating lumps of money to member associations with an effort of driving the development mandate.

When commenting on the development, the president of Botswana football coaches, Nelson Olebile said that if the German was really coming, it would be a light at the end of the tunnel for local football. “It is a welcome development, the expert will also equip us on developmental methodologies of the game, and that is a first step in the right direction.”
