Mogoditshane Meat Festival aspires to be ‘central carnival’

The inaugural Mogoditshane Meat Festival is the brainchild of Mogodiri Development Society. The event organizers want for it to be the central carnival where the towns’ people meet, celebrate and enjoy great music.

In a market saturated with the traditional food festival format, Mogoditshane Meat Festival intends to raise the bar. When speaking to WeekendLife this week, one of the event organisers Mondale Pule said they believe in the need for a new kind of meat festival, one that delivers more than just the opportunity to watch others cook and instead offers experiences, inspiration and learning the transformation that is ‘the way people think about meat and or food in general’.

Pule said the festival represents a unique opportunity to deliver a meaningful message in an inspiring festival context. “We aim to deliver an educational experience that will help to build new food communities, support and grow our local food and meat networks, and leave customers considering the food and meat they eat long after they return home,” he said.

He said their wish is to have strong partnerships with different entities, many regional food producers, retailers and community projects so that they are uniquely positioned to deliver an extra- ordinary celebration of what is possible when a thriving local food scene comes out to play. “It is our aim over the next three years to build an event that attracts national attention and places Mogoditshane firmly on the national stage, as the sustainable meat capital of Botswana.”

While the Mogoditshane Meat Festival is about variety of meat, it also aims to grow and adapt to suit the requirements of people from various places. As the village of Mogoditshane grows, the organisers’ aim is to focus on different pursuits that can be beneficial to the entire community and they hope the festival goes to great lengths to incorporate educational elements to ensure the history and integrity of concepts like these do not cease to exist.

Mogoditshane is a village blessed with an incredible number of independent restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and retailers; as such the organizers want to create a way for visitors to experience all that they have to offer. During the festival participating people will offer special festival menus, tastings and promotions. The aim is to get more people visiting Mogoditshane eateries and spending their “food- pulas” with the independents.

Mogodiri Pty Ltd is blessed with the good nature of hundreds of people from around the village who donate their time, ability and passion to assist with hosting Kweneng’s biggest show. To enable this success they have recruited and continue to recruit many local master minds and clubs to assist them in the lead up to and running of the event.

Mogodiri intends to make the festival an annual event and to make it a key tourism event. It has different opportunities such as catering opportunities and entertainment from local, national and international artists. Rolled into a full day of fun and entertainment, Mogoditshane Meat Festival estimates a gate attendance of 2, 000 people or more and has the potential to go from strength to strength guided by a dedicated army of volunteers. The event will be held at Mophuting Farm near Sir Seretse Khama Barracks on October 28th and will start from 1000 HRS and end the following morning.
