The race for the chairmanship of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is taking shape. With the likes of Tebelelo Seretse and Jacob Nkate having declared interest in the position, former Minister of defence Justice and Security, Dikgakgamatso Ndelu Seretse is the latest to make his intentions know. We reproduce his statement of intent below:

“Well, I have decided to contest for the chairmanship of the BDP in July 2015. I can’t say much now except that our party needs to continue to be relevant and responsive to Batswana's aspirations and we need to continually reform to maintain such relevance and responsiveness. We don't just need a strong government we need a strong party. We have not done too well in the recent election and we have seen the opposition triumph not of its strength but of our weaknesses. We need to mend this weak link. We need more unity amongst democrats and we need some serious introspection and reforms to give the Party a new lease of life and I trust I am the right catalyst for this process.”

President Khama has told this publication that he is aware of the jostling for posts in the central committee. He said he is ready to work with anyone who BDP members will vote into the central committee.

The race for positions within the ruling party’s governing structure will hot up towards the close of the first quarter of 2015, when running mates are established for Ndelu Seretse, Tebelelo Seretse and Jacob Nkate.

Do you think the courts will help put the UDC, BMD impasse within reasonable time ahead of the 2019 General Election?
