Why Masisi camp is against Molefhi

Publishing Date : 22 May, 2017

Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) members aligned to the Vice President, Mokgweetsi Masisi’s camp have made it clear at one of the recent meetings that they will not welcome any compromise deal with the Nonofo Molefhi camp.

Masisi’s supporters are convinced that Molefhi wants to become the President of the party at the expense of Masisi. Insiders have revealed that the determined Masisi team has totally dismissed any chance of compromise because they believe that it will give Molefhi a chance to work his way to the top as secretary general. As things stand, Masisi’s supporters are “confident” that they are going to defeat Molefhi at the BDP elective congress slated for July in Tonota. Molefhi is challenging incumbent Masisi for the position of chairman.

Although he has made it clear that his is just a pursuit to help prepare the party for the 2019 general election, his opponents are not convinced, they believe that his ambition is bigger than that of “just being chairman”. They argue that he would not “risk all” for a “mere ceremonial position of chairman which has no executive powers.” Molefhi has also pledged to resign his cabinet position should he be voted chairman of the party.  Masisi supporters want Molefhi to go the full length and contest the chairmanship against Masisi. They hold strongly that they will defeat him heavily in Tonota.
